Delray

Southwest Detroit’s Hungarian Enclave.

Originally a village on the far outreaches of Detroit, Delray saw heavy industry arrive just before the onset of the 20th Century. The village would be annexed in 1906 and continued to grow as manufacturing expanded throughout the area. As time passed and Detroit began to lose population, the city turned Delray into a heavily industrial corridor with some of the worst pollution in the state. Many residents have health issues because of this. Only a handful of commercial buildings remain, and the population continues to decline. The Gordie Howe International Bridge calls Delray home, and much of the neighborhood was wiped out to construct it.

Every location listed here may not technically be in Delray proper, but it’s close or relevant enough to be included on this page.

At the bottom of this page, every location I’ve documented in Delray is plotted on a map to better understand the neighborhood.
